Castello Sforzesco

(Castle Museum) Piazza Castello • Cairoli stop on the metro line 1.

Originally a military fortress, the Castello Sforzesco was completely remodelled by the more
comfort-minded Francesco Sforza. The new and improved defences were designed by Leonardo
da Vinci. The "Sala delle Asse" has a superb ceiling decoration designed by Leonardo da Vinci
and painted by his assistants. The museum is installed in a series of Renaissance halls and is
well stocked with impressive collections that include Michelangelo's Pietá Rondanini. There are
also paintings by Bellini, Tiepolo, Mantegna, Correggio, Titian and Van Dyck.
