Orientation

Milan is full of contradictions, a modern city unlike other Italian cities lacking the perfume of
the dolce vita and contemporary aspects that represent the leading edge of Italy's fashion and
design industry. At the same time it is a historic city, with enough churches and museums to
keep you busy for a week - the Accademia Brera, duomo and the church of Santa Maria delle
Grazie - but there are also parks and cafés to relax in.

Most of its attractions are concentrated in the city centre, between the duomo (cathedral) and
the Castello Sforzesco. The duomo is the best place to begin exploring the city and is within
walking distance of dozens of historic sites. The city's efficient underground railway, the
Metropolitana Milanesa (METRO) has a stop here on the yellow line.

Apart from the city centre, another area deserving attention is the Brera, immediately north of
the duomo, with its posh galleries and fashionable shopping streets. Also check out Navigli to
the south.
